Bible Paragraph Summary - Philippians & Colossians

Give instruction to a wise person and he will become still wiser; teach a righteous person and he will increase his insight.  Proverbs 9:9

 My NAS Bible has chapter summary headings--sometimes more than one in the chapter--as you can see in the picture above of the end of Philippians and the beginning of Colossians.  See the words in the bolded font?  Apparently not all Bibles have this and since I've used the NAS all of my life, I never knew (or really realized) that some Bibles don't have these headings!  I like getting a sort of preview of what is going to happen in the words that follow.  I suppose these are included at the discretion of the translator and publisher.

I decided to type these out for every Bible book and chapter so I could easily reference where a particular story or topic was instead of spending a long time searching through the pages for a name or topic to jump out at me.  And what if I am not near a computer or can't whip out my phone to look it up?  (I guess that's the Old School #BibleNerd in me!)  For instance, I wanted to know where the story of Zaccheus was in the Gospels.  I can quickly and easily look through these listings and find that the story of Zaccheus is found in Luke 19.  Success!  And that didn't take long at all.

I've included these sheets in my A5 Bible Reference Binder and I actually have them in a few of my Bible binders so that no matter where I am, I will have access to the information.  I decided to share this information for you, dear reader, in case you are interested in something like this!  It IS #FridayFreebie, after all.  So look for these posts every Friday for a while; I will post the New Testament first then post the Old Testament.  Look for "Friday Freebie" or "Paragraph Summary" in the labels/tags.  Feel free to copy and format them how you will use them.  I think that any Bible study information should not cost anything to anyone and would appreciate you sharing about this content and about my blog with anyone you know would appreciate what is found here.]

At the Moment of Salvation - 40 Things 15, 16, 17

  ...that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; or with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.  Romans 10:9-10

.....

At the moment of salvation, every believer in Jesus Christ receives 40 things from God. Of the 40 things, 39 of them are permanent and can never be removed from the believer - even by God himself! The only temporary thing is the Filling of the Holy Spirit which we lose due to our own free will to act against God. We can repeatedly gain the Filling of the Spirit following confession of our known sins to the Father.

.....

15. Identification with Jesus Christ

At the moment of salvation, the believer is permanently identified with Christ’s work on the cross by God the Father. The Christian is forever after identified with Christ in His death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and present session at the Father’s right hand. This is synonymous with "Past" and "Present" Positional Truth. Romans 6:3-12; Galatians 2:20

Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. (Romans 6:3-12)

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)

16. Indwelling of God the Father

The believer is indwelt by God the Father at the moment of salvation. The reason why the Christian is indwelt by the Father at that moment is to provide a guarantee of unseen, yet extremely powerful assets and provisions for living the Christian life. In eternity past, the first person of the Trinity authored all of these invisible assets and provisions. He also granted all blessing in time and rewards for eternity "in Christ." This indwelling is also for the glorification of His plan for the Church Age. John 14:23; Ephesians 4:6

Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (John 14:23)

One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:6)

17. Indwelling of Jesus Christ

The indwelling of Jesus Christ is the guarantee of our membership in the Royal family of God that results in instant transportation to heaven at death by our lord Jesus Christ Himself! Christ also imparts encouragement to us as we grow spiritually through the Word of God. John 14:20; Romans 8:10, 2 Corinthians 3:5; Colossians 1:27

On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. (John 14:20)

But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. (Romans 8:10)

Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. (2 Corinthians 3:5)

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27)

God of Our Fathers, Known of Old

The king reflected and said, 'Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?'  While the word was in the king's mouth, a voice came from heaven, saying 'King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: sovereignty has been removed from you, and you will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling place will be with the beasts of the field. You will be given grass to eat like cattle, and seven periods of time will pass over you until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.'  Daniel 4:30-32

God of Our Fathers, Known of Old

Rudyard Kipling, poem (1865-1936)

God of our Fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle-line,
beneath whose awful hand we hold
dominion over palm and pine;
Lord God of hosts, be with us yet,
lest we forget--lest we forget!

The tumult and the shouting dies;
the captains and the kings depart;
still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
an humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of hosts, be with us yet,
lest we forget--lest we forget!

Far-called, our navies melt away;
on dune and headland sinks the fire:
lo, all our pomp of yesterday
is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the nations, spare us yet,
lest we forget--lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
wild tongues that have not Thee in awe,
such boastings as the Gentiles use,
or lesser breeds without the law--
Lord God of hosts, be with us yet,
lest we forget--lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
in reeking tube and iron shard,
all valiant dust that builds on dust,
and, guarding, calls not Thee to guard,
for frantic boast and foolish word--
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!

Rudyard Kipling is not known as a hymnwriter.  He became famous for his poetry and for books like Barrack-Room Ballads and The Jungle Book in the 1890s.  In 1897, when England was celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign, the Times of London asked Rudyard Kipling to write a special poem for the occasion.

The poem created quite a stir.  Instead of praising his country's military strength, Kipling sounded almost like an Old Testament prophet calling for mercy from a just and righteous God.

It seemed uncharacteristic for Kipling, who was associated with British colonialism, to write, "All our pomp of yesterday is one with Nineveh and Tyre!"  Kipling's hymn serves as a powerful sermon to all who are tempted to elevate the glory and power of their nation above that of the sovereign Creator.

God of Our Fathers

O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us the work that You did in their days, in the days of old.  You with Your own hand drove out the nations; then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, then You spread them abroad.  For by their own sword they did not possess the land, and their own arm did not save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of your presence, for You favored them.  Psalm 44:1-4

God of Our Fathers
Daniel Crane Roberts (1841-1907)

God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
leads forth in beauty all the starry band
of shining worlds in splendor through the skies,
our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past;
in this free land by Thee our lot is cast;
be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.

From war's alarms, from deadly pestilence,
be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way;
lead us from night to never-ending day;
fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
and glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.

.....
Six years before his death in 1907, Daniel Roberts wrote, "I remain a country parson, known only within my own small world."  This hymn was penned while he pastored a rural church in Brandon, Vermont.  He wrote it in 1876 to commemorate the one-hundredth birthday of the Declaration of the Independence, and it was sung for the first time at Brandon's Fourth of July celebration

Because the people of Brandon enjoyed the hymn, Roberts submitted it to the committee planning the Constitution's centennial celebration.  The committee chose it as the official hymn for the occasion and sent it to the organist at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New York City to compose an original tune.  The new tune, with a dramatic trumpet fanfare, helped to make this hymn unique.

I still get goosebumps remembering the first time I heard the amazing organist at my childhood church play the trumpet fanfare.

At the Moment of Salvation #14 #15 (a weekly series)

   ...that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; or with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.  Romans 10:9-10

We can repeatedly gain the Filling of the Spirit following confession of our known sins to the Father.

.....

14. Freedom From the Penalty of the Mosaic Law

At the moment of salvation, the believer is delivered from the curse of the law. At that moment, God the Father graciously imparts freedom from bondage to all clauses of the Mosaic Law. This means that the Law, as a unit, can never curse any Christian for failing to obey it, because our Lord Jesus Christ has perfectly obeyed it and that obedience is transferred to us. The law of God is perfect in its content and purpose. It instructed the Jew on the reality of disobedience of spiritual law. It revealed the answer to the sin problem. It also revealed the Laws of Divine Establishment for the entire human race. This Christian freedom does not mean freedom from the doctrine in the law, but rather the actual responsibility to it as a member of a Theocracy, which we are not!

Personal love toward the Triune God by the spiritually mature believer, plus our being "in Christ," who fulfilled the law is our fulfillment. Romans 13:8; Romans 8:2; Galatians 3:10-13

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. (Romans 13:8)

Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:2)

All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." (Galatians 3:10-13)

Battle Hymn of the Republic

 ...then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.  For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.  The last enemy that will be abolished is death.  For He has put all things in subjection under His feet.  But when He says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him.   1 Corinthians 15:24-27

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910)

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword--
His truth is marching on.

Glory! glory, hallelujah!
Glory! glory, hallelujah!
Glory! glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps,
they have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps--
His day is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never sound retreat,
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgement seat;
O be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
with a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me;
as He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free,
while God is marching on.
.....

Julia Ward Howe wrote these lyrics in the heart of the American Civil War.  She sent the words to the Atlantic Monthly magazine and received an honorarium of five dollars.  But the money wasn't her concern.  Her purpose was to provide some wholesome lyrics for the tune of "John Brown's Body Lies A-Moldering in the Grave."  She accomplished that and more.  When President Abraham Lincoln first heard the hymn, he asked to have it sung again.

The text is filled with biblical allusions.  The expression "grapes of wrath" refers to Revelation 14:19; the sounding trumpet is probably from Revelation 8.  For the Christian, the message of this song is that God's truth is eternal.  Although circumstances may appear overwhelmingly difficult, God will still accomplish His purposes, and His truth will endure.

It can be dangerous to identify political causes of even national patriotism with God's truth.  Nations my rise and fall, but God's truth remains forever.  "His truth is marching on."

I think that any Bible study information should not cost anything to anyone and would appreciate you sharing about this content and about my blog with anyone you know would appreciate what is found here.

At The Moment of Salvation #12 #13 (A Weekly Series)

  ...that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; or with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.  Romans 10:9-10

We can repeatedly gain the Filling of the Spirit following confession of our known sins to the Father.

.....
12. Removal of Domination of the Old Sin Nature

At the moment of salvation, we are "dead" to the domination of the Old Sin Nature. The Old Sin Nature should be a "toothless tiger" in the life of the Christian. It has only the power we allow it to have. At salvation, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit becomes the new "ruler" of the body where He creates a temple for the indwelling of our Lord Jesus Christ as the "Shekinah Glory." This is the guarantee that we can be under divine blessing as we advance in the spiritual life.

This is also known as PAST Positional Truth, where we are identified with Christ on the cross. We are identified with His spiritual death, physical death, and burial. This is accomplished by the Baptism (identification) of the Holy Spirit.

The application of this PAST Positional Truth is the Christian in fellowship with God, possessing a continual attitude of rejecting, separating from, and being dead to personal sin and the production of human good and evil! Romans 6:6-12

(Romans 6:6-12)

13. Removal of Satan’s Power

At salvation, we have freedom from Satan’s kingdom of evil. Satan has sovereignty over the unsaved and authority over all those who choose to live their lives in his cosmic (worldly) system of sin and evil. Satan’s influence of mankind is through man’s Old Sin Nature. However, Satan’s influence is "held in check" by God’s grace manifested in His laws of Divine Establishment. Colossians 1:12-13; 1 John 5:19; Ephesians 6:11-12; Ephesians 2:1-2; Galatians 5:1

Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, (Colossians 1:12-13)

We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. (1 John 5:19)

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:11-12)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (Ephesians 2:1-2)

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)

Bible Paragraph Summary - Matthew and Mark
